Hello, I am hedayet, a graduate on Applied Statistics.Could anyone please reply to my questions:

Q.01: Suppose,  a student is not granted the fund required for MS is Statistics in Canada, can he/she  stil think to complete the degree by  taking 3,50,000 Tk (Bangladeshi Currency) from home and earning the rest?

Q.02: Can students, with degree based on only statistics and mathematics, apply for the "MS on DATAMINING" in Canada?

Hedayet, Good to see that you

Hedayet,

Good to see that you are finally here.

Answer to your first question depends on how much fund is available from that university and how much more fund is required. The amount you've mentioned is approximately 5000 Canadian dollar, which is not enough for one semester in Canada in most of the universities. Again, it depends on which university and which city you are in. On an average (my estimate), you would require from 20K to 30K per year to cover your tuition and living expenses.

Working part time?

While it is possible to get a work permit, you have to wait at least 6 months in your studies and maintain a good academic standing. You have to apply through your university to get the work permit. Your university will decide on your eligibility (in terms of good standing and your work load with that university)

Are jobs easily available?

I would say, NO. Again, it depends on which city you are in. Say, if you are in Toronto, you might get a cashier job at a local grocery store. But in most case, you will find it really hard to get a 4hr/week job.

Can I maintain study and job together?

I doubt. Because no one can imagine how much pressure you will feel once you start your study here in Canada. No matter how I explain, it will be nearly impossible for you to believe that you will find no time even to think of what you will eat at night. The only thing you will think is how I will do that assignment and prepare for that exam. Believe me. But things will be lot easier (as you will be used to the system) after, say, 1 or 2 semesters.

On your second question, there is no degree to my knowledge that you've mentioned. You will have to do a plain Masters in Statistics. But you may choose to work on Datamining in your project work or thesis work.

Students with mathematics or statistics background can work in Datamining areas. But if your superviser has expertise in that area, it will be easier. Otherwise, you have to work on your own, which is NOT easy at this level.
